A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per chevron Gules and Vert a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis Argent, on a chief Or (Buff) a saltire throughout Azure fimbriated of the third.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed “HONE THE CUTTING EDGE” in Red letters.

The design incorporates the combined campaign services of all elements of the present organization through four wars.  The chevron alludes to a tepee for the Indian Wars and the saltire counterchanged denotes Civil War service in the Union Army.  The fleurs-de-lis represent service in France during World War I and World War II, and the green area connotes an island for service in the Asiatic Pacific.  Blue denotes the award of the Presidential Unit Citation Streamer for “Hurtgen Forest.”  Green and red represent the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for “France” and the Belgium Fourragere for “Belgium” and “Ardennes.”  Red (scarlet) denotes military support and leadership.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 10 February 1977. The symbolism was amended 14 July 2023.
